Reflection on the Animal Shelter/Zoo Trip

The second opportunity we had in AGS to take action was the freshman course specific field trip. I signed up for the biology one where we went to the Town Lake Animal Shelter and the Austin Zoo. At the animal shelter we learned about how it was operated and what benefits it had. We walked around the shelter learning how it is a no-kill shelter and being enlightened on how we could help in the future. While we were there we played with some of the younger dogs to get them used to the presence of humans. Afterwards, we took a trip to the Austin Zoo. Here we learned that the goal of the zoo is to take endangered animals or abused animals and keep them safe. We got a tour of the zoo and saw how they keep the animals in a safe environment. We walked around picking up trash and cleaning the area so it was clean and less polluted for the animals. This trip opened my eyes to how few zoos and shelters there are like the ones in Austin. Most zoos just exploit the animals, and most shelters take in animals but get rid rid of them in any way they can when they don't have enough room for them or see them as worthy to adopt.

This is my community service project that I did with Marshall Stewart. It was a benefit concert for a non profit organization called Nasaru, who's goal is to help the impoverished people around the world. For more information on my project go to the My Community Service Project page.
