Infograph Project

Obesity in New Orleans

Logan and I made an infograph on the obesity rates in New Orleans compared to other major cities in the United State. The other cities we used were Austin, Chicago, Denver, Los Angles, New York City, and New Orleans. We tried to pick cities that are the largest and in different parts of the country. Our plan is to show everyone that New Orleans has one of the highest obesity rates in the United States.
Each of the six cities (Austin, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and New York City) is represented in the infograph with an image that represents the culture of that city. An example would be a cowboy hat for Austin because Austin is stereotypically known for having cowboys living there. Each image is also scaled to size, representing the percent of obesity, with the larger percentages having larger images then the cities with a smaller percentage. We believe that presenting the data in this fashion will make the data more relatable to the viewers and make the data more interesting. Having different images relate to different cities will allow the viewers to interpret and connect with the images more quickly and comfortable. We also feel that making the images different sizes will help the viewers be able to understand the graph without having to read the numbers, they should be able to tell which cities have a higher percentage by the size of the image.
Overall we want our viewers to become more aware of the obesity in the south, especially New Orleans, compared to other cities in the north. We believe that the types of food play a huge role in determining the obesity percentage in a given area. We want the viewers to understand that the food in the south is unhealthier and it is a contributing factor to the high obesity rate in New Orleans.

Costa Rica: Spanish Only Reflection

On of my favorite parts of the Costa Rica trip was the "No habla ingles, por favor" button that we had to use for a day. This meant that we could only speak spanish to people when we were wearing it. This was my first experience speaking only Spanish to people and fortunately enough we were in Costa Rica. I had a real experience speaking spanish with native speakers and interacting in a massive culture. I was named as the leader in my group in communication because of my spanish speaking ability and I used it to my advantage. I ended up speaking spanish a majority of the time so I could have a genuine experience in a spanish speaking environment. This was my first true experience of the global ineraction that AGS prides itself on.
