Heifer Simulation Reflection

The Heifer trip is a good start to the travel aspect of AGS. The simulation was a great example of the different struggles people face everyday. I was placed in the Urban slums of India, and we had a great time. We had literally no food for a group of 30 people and I was in charge of cooking the little rice and oatmeal we had. I made sure certain people got food more than others and help people stay organized. I personally didnt eat for 2 days and I remember the buffet after the simulation was the greatest moment of my life. The simulation taught me how to keep people together and enlightened me on the situation of third world countries. The Heifer trip is a great introduction to AGS and the culture we experience.

Costa Rica Travel Packet

During our trip to Costa Rica, we had a travel packet to fill out containing questions from each of our core and foreign language classes. The questions ranged from a reflection of our experience speaking only spanish with the natives to a scientific analysis of the components of a volcano. The packet required students to stop and analyze the many components of Costa Rica and truly understand the culture. As we stopped at each destination, we would take notes on things we learned and the different impacts certain exports have on the economy or which resources of the rainforest benefit the Bribri people. The work we had to do in our packet is what made us truly learn the culture of Costa Rica. Instead of sight seeing, we absorbed the knowledge we learned and documented the culture.
